For an Android smartphone price below INR 10,000 (approx USD 200), Lava S12 carries an impressive spec sheet. It comes with a 3D user interface, a 5 MegaPixel camera (with zoom) and a 3.2″ capacitive touch screen with a decent 480×320 resolution. It is powered by a 600 MHz Qualcomm processor, which has become a standard for android phones in this price range. Sadly, Lava S12 runs on the age old Android 2.2 (Froyo) which should be a big turn-off for many.

Lava has made a special effort to work on some India specific apps which comes pre-loaded with the phone. That’s not a good news for those who hate bloatware, but Lava believes that the apps they have included add enough value as they have developed them with Indian users and their usage in mind. Some of the apps which come pre-loaded include Saavn, Office Suite, TuneWiki, ZengaTV, MoneyControl, ToI, Facebook & Twitter. It comes with a 2GB microSD card and can be expanded upto 32GB. The 1300mAh battery is amongst the best we have seen amongst the phones in this segment.

The matte leather finish gives a professional look for the phone, but the curved back panel might not go well with many. Lava though, insists that they have designed the looks of the phone for the youth. The 3D UI transforms the home screen into a virtual 3D space and offers 16 customizable home screens, which can be modified by the user as per his requirements and interests. To keep the user connected on the move, the S12 comes with 3G (up to7.2Mbps), Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth connectivity.

Lava is always known for their quality speakers. Even in S12, they promise a top notch entertainment experience in collaboration with companies like SRS and Dolby Digital. Lava S12 will come with SlideIT keyboard which is an innovative keyboard solution that enables users to type by sliding fingers.

Lava S12 will be priced at an MRP of Rs.9999 and will come with a free 2GB microSD card in the box.Features like 3D UI, homescreen animations are great to have in a budget phone. But with just 600 MHz processor, it should be interesting to see how Lava has managed to ensure that the end-user experience isn’t hampered. Lava is already late into the android club, so they better get it right the very first time.
