Also known as LG P990 Star, LG P990 Optimus Speed, it's the World's First Dual Core Smartphone...
The new LG Optimus 2X is a large 4-inch display powerful mobile phone running the Android OS...It sports a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor running at 1GHz .It can play full HD (1080p) TV-out via HDMI and HD video recording with a 8 mega-pixel main camera and a 1.3 megapixel camera at the front for video calling.
The new LG Optimus 2X offers 1080p Full HD video playback and recording with HDMI mirroring that expands content on external displays to full HD quality. The LG Optimus 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatible digital device such as HD TVs for a console-like gaming experience taking full advantage of the phone’s HDMI mirroring, accelerometer and gyro sensor. The smartphone also includes both rear- and front-facing cameras for video calling , microSD memory expandability, and 1500mAh battery.
Appearance
The LG Optimus 2X is a phone of pretty big proportions. It measures 122.4mm tall by 64.2mm wide by 9.9mm thick, and has a screen of 4-inches.
Pocket Lint says that it “isn’t the best looking phone" when compared to other phones of a similar size, but also that it "doesn’t do much wrong”.
Digital Versus compares the “masculine” look to some of HTC’s handsets, describing LG as having taken “a sober, reserved approach with a mixture of black and greys and sharp edges”.
Both Pocket Lint and Digital Versus show disappointment at the metal strip on the back of the device, with “Google” emblazoned upon it.
Zdnet describes the phone’s ergonomics as “fine” but says that the phone is “on the heavy side”.
Engadget describes the Optimus 2X as feeling “very well put together” and “rigid and unyielding”, helping to form the conclusion that the “cumulative result is a highly pleasing one”.
Display
Zdnet was happy with the 480 by 800 pixels screen, saying the image is “impressively sharp and bright”.
Mobility Minded disagrees with this a little and said this of the screen: “At first the colorful screen looks great, but when using the phone for a longer time I noticed the colors are a bit unnatural and overdone”.
Digital Versus says that “blacks still look underexposed and whites washed out with tones of grey” but did say, “LG hasn’t ruined the reputation of its new smartphone with a shoddy screen”.
Engadget went one step further by saying that while LG’s IPS display as is not up with the iPhone 4, it is “a notch above the average”.
Power
The main feature of this phone is, of course, the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor. The processor comes promising lightning speeds.
Zdnet say, “activities like screen flipping, transitions between home screens, responsiveness to finger sweeps and pans, and scrolling through image galleries and music libraries are all much smoother and faster than we've seen before”. It also suggested specific features, like video playback and response in the web browser, that benefit from the dual-core processor.
Mobility Minded describe the Optimus 2X exactly as you would want from something that is supposed to be speedy and smooth - “lightning fast” with “no lag at all”.
CNET says that the Optimus 2X has “stupendous speed” and “Angry Birds, for example, runs so quickly and smoothly on the 2X that it seems like the phone was specifically built to play that game”.
Operating System and Software
The operating system with the LG Optimus 2X is Android 2.2. Android doesn’t hold many surprises for many anymore, particularly with a slightly older version.
LG has added its own skin to the user interface on the device though, so there are some features you won’t get with standard Android.
Some of the LG widgets seem to be popular with reviewers, with the weather widget that takes into account wind chill being described as “particularly good” by CNET.
However, other parts are not as popular. Engadget was particularly unhappy in its review, saying “the mildly tweaked Android homescreens plod along” and “UI responsiveness on the 2X can be described as mediocre”.
Engadget suggests that the user download LauncherPro to use instead of LG’s Android skin.
Mobility Minded disagrees, “Zooming, swiping, opening apps, scrolling, you name it, the speed witch [sic] the Optimus 2X shows brings out the best in Android”.
